The Hullabaloo at Maroo [Past]
#21
"How to set up the ambush..." Arl tapped her cheek as she pondered the situation. They could hide behind the rocks.. but how would they ensure the bandits saw.. "Could we put together a proper tent, with the opening facing the river? Something large enough to be seen from farther back. We put a fake body inside small tent with a sack of rocks outside it - something they might be able to steal without alerting the body. Campsite can't be too big, since we don't want to scare them.. but if we pulled that off we could put it behind and to the side of one these larger rocks for easy hiding. Arl motioned towards a particularly dense group of rocks.

"Maybe Riesig.. could pretend to be a campfire? Near the bag of rocks so he can mist them? With me as a bush and Rand as.. ehh... maybe we should all just hide in the rocks near the campsite. Keep it simple?"

"I mean... these guys are sort of simple themselves." Rand shrugged.

Riesig had zoned out for a moment. He tuned back in to hear them contemplating a plan. "I could be a fire. Like, build a fire around me and I can hide inside of it. When they get close to the tent, I could burst out and...do something! Yes, something. Sounds good to me." He smiled. That was a rather tactical thing for him to think of. He was unnecessarily happy about that.

"..Well. Fire plan it is then! Let's position everything so that the spot where Rand and I are hiding is between the fire and the bag of 'goods'. Something like this.." Arl weaves another battle map, with the positioning as so:

X X O X X X X

"If we have the tent be at that angle they'd likely try to approach from the left, keeping an eye on the tent as they sneak right by us..." the warrior smiled. "I like it! Let's get started.. better hide while we do it in case they come early..."

Arl starts heading over to a particularly nice outcropping of rocks to begin making the woven parts needed for a simple tent and a bag to fill with rocks.

Riesig just climbed into the stream and got low in the water. That's hiding right? He thinks so.

Baring any unusual occurrences, Arl continues setting things up until it is time for Riesig to climb into the firepit.

Although she grew up in Verto, most of Arl's mercenary training had been in woodland areas. Since there were no sticks to be had, and the.. results.. of previous attempts to weave such support beams when she was younger had been rather lackluster, the woman set herself to creating a set of sleeveless sweaters (pillar cozies?) to stabilize stacks of rocks that could then serve as pillars for a square 'tent'.

It'd be questionable if such a tent would be stable enough for use - folk would likely take offense to being crushed to death in their sleep - but it would surely be well enough for a fake sleeping body.

It wasn't long before they heard voices coming from the direction of their destination. Two voices bouncing back and forth, broken up only by the splatter and bubble of the stream.

"-all ended up like this we're going to look stupid."

"-old you we should have kept some of them in town."

"We'll deal with it after we bring back the water for eve- shh... do you see that?"

"Looks like a camp site... you go left along the stream.... I'll go...

When the site was ready, Riesig was totally hiding in the fire pit. With the crackling around him, he spread his mist thin and far to know when they got close. Oh boy, this was gonna be fun! When they got close enough, and in between him and the others, he would burst out of the fire, take hold of the inferno around him and try to spread it to the fuel source that was their bodies. Time to light the candles!

It wasn't long before a man in a crimson jacket with a pink bandana came sneaking along the edge of the stream, passing Arl and Randall.

He was carrying a long sword which he had drawn and was hanging loosely at his side, tapping tree stumps and scraping bushes as he headed for the faked clearing. Perhaps sneaking was not the correct word.

Rand was crouched down in one of the bushes near the site in what must have been an uncomfortable squat. He tried to catch Arl's line of sight.

If successful he exaggeratedly shrugged and held up two fingers.
