[Past Bounty] Long Walks off Short Piers
#61
Hayze - "Oh, big deal. Umbral castor, living shadow, bald guy in white robes. Wields underhanded daggers. I'm sure you have a record if this is how you approach your work. But, the best part? You'll never get what you came here for. And that is what makes me not care about you." He waved off the use of magic at first. And at the end, he was actually laughing. Not so much at him, but more so at the irony of life it seemed. Hayze hears the door to the establishment close.

Baron - The detritus clears away easily. The only person he notices was what was clearly someone who didn't actually live in the area. They were walking the a gaggle of small furry pets and gave him a wave of greeting as they strolled past.

Hayze smiled in response to the man’s laughter. He supposed it wasn’t for a very dissimilar reason. Irony. So little did this man understand about what Hayze was capable of. How was he going to give the authorities Hayze’s description after his death?

Hayze’s hand was already outstretched toward the man’s chest, still pointing his finger. The Dagger of Truth appeared in his hand, forming from liquid shadow in an instant, as Hayze took a short step forward, thrusting it toward the man’s heart.

He heard his shadow gasp and come rushing back to him, but it was too late to change his aim this time.

Expecting such a violent response, the man moved to the side. The blade still dragged across his skin opening a thin cut across his chest. What surprises Hayze, though, is that the suspected answer to the question he had asked doesn't show up. All it says is 'I don't have one'.

Baron waved to the dog walker, feigning absent mindedness as he finished clearing away the detritus. He began looking over the cellar entrance to see how it was secured. As he did so he patted himself down as if trying to remember where he placed his keys. While he put on the show he naturally felt out to see if he was being thought about by those around him.

Hayze was not satisfied with the blade merely cutting the man’s flesh, but he needed to know the answer as quickly as possible. Reading it would take too long he suspected, so he dismissed the blade. His shadow moved with him, lending him strength, as he grabbed the man by the front of his shirt and attempted to slam his back against the counter, bending him backward. This allowed him to also see the man by the door.

“He doesn’t have a merchant liscense!” His shadow said frantically in his mind.

How could he not have one? His client had sent him to get it. And the answer on his blade was always the truth, according to the person being cut. He truly did not know what to do.

“Why was I sent here?!” He yelled at the man. Was there a mistake? Was it a trap? He was obviously missing something and he wouldn’t leave without an answer.

Baron - Not a thought was given about him. He seems to have pulled off random person that totally belongs here pretty well. It's secured with a a puzzle like lock around a chain that goes through the bars keeping it closed.

Hayze - He managed to grab and spin the man, but couldn't get him to bend over. When he looked by the door, he saw no one. "How the hell would I know why you're here!? Currently it just seems to be ruining my day!

Baron squatted down and held aloft the lock, trying to determine the means by which it could be opened. He also gave a cursory glance to where the chain was secured to see if it was rusted or rotten in any way.

Despite the neglected appearance of the area, the chain is in surprisingly good shape. The lock seemed to be a puzzle. Move the bits into the right pattern, and it would open up.

Baron's brow furrowed as he fiddled mindlessly with the puzzle pieces for a moment. People were creatures of habit and didn't like to put more burden on themselves if they could at all avoid it. Baron cast his eyes around for any sort of insignia, crest or repeating pattern in the architecture of the place.

Hayze growled. There had to be a reason he was sent here other than to find out that there was no asset to be found. He did not suspect simple poor planning on his client’s part. No, there was something more. They knew each other and his client had wanted something like this to happen.

He glanced out across the room. The man with the staff had not just closed the door but he had left the building. Now there was nothing to stop him from completing his task. His client had not discouraged Hayze from harming the man before him. If there truly was no merchant license to be found, then this was all that was left to do.

Still holding the man with the added strength of his shadow, he raised his right arm. ”If you will not tell me, then I will ask it of your blood!” He once again summoned his truth-giving dagger and stabbed it toward the man’s chest.

If he truly had no idea why someone would come seeking his merchant license, then simply cutting the skin would get him no further. He sought the heart and the secrets it held.
