[Past Bounty] Long Walks off Short Piers
#71
Baron had managed to find a repeating pattern in the fence posts. With a bit of fiddling he got a close enough pattern within the lock, and it popped open.

Hayze plunges the dagger deep after a brief struggle which he ended up winning. The last thing the man said to him as he died was "Pawn". Upon his blade the name of the man who hired him appeared.

Smiling at his slipped on his coat and pocketed the lock. Bending down he pulled at the cellar doors and attempted to open them, taking care to adjust his tension if the hinges creeked.

The doors open smoothly. Inside he sees darkness where the light from outside stops near the base of the stairs.

Baron descended slowly into the darkness, closing his eyes and allowing himself to follow the steps down by sense of touch. When he felt he had reached the bottom he slowly opened his eyes to see how much the could see with his eyes adjusted.

He was unable to see much more. A few feet really. He got the sense that this basement was indeed very large, and often unused. He could smell the faint scent of wood polish farther in. And despite the scene from the outside, there was no scent of stagnation down here, as though the air was frequently cycled.

A few feet was enough to stumble around in, Baron moved slowly, making sure he didn't knock into anything if he could avoid it. Following the scent of polish that would hopefully lead him towards the house proper.

And stumble he did. The way was mostly clear, and after a few minutes of it his eyes adjusted more. He could see vaguely darker areas being objects and less dark being open areas. He followed the scent around the objects to a very nice desk that seemed freshly polished. It appeared to be in the middle of the basement and space cleared around it.

Curious. Baron pinched the bridge of his nose and willed his eyes to swirl into a spirals, allowing him to see any traces of magic around him and the desk. Now that he was beneath the house itself he also decided to get a feel for the number of minds in the place.

Panting, Hayze slowly removed the blade from the man’s chest. He gave it a few wipes on the man’s shirt before looking at what was written on the blade. Since it had pierced his heart, what was written would not be an answer to a question, but some piece of knowledge held by the dead person that would further Hayze’s interests.

“Charlie.” He read aloud with a growl. So it had come full circle. His suspicion seemed to be true. Charlie knew there was no merchant liscense. He just wanted Hayze to hurt the man, maybe even kill him. The man he had just killed knew of Charlie and knew that Hayze was here because of him.

His mission seemed to be complete. He needed to return to Charlie not only to follow the words on the blade but to claim his reward.

He hadn’t forgotten about the man with the staff who had left. Why would he have at first defended the establishment but then abandoned it, if not to find reinforcements. He needed to leave quickly. The way he had come in was dangerous, so he gave one more look around the room for alternate exits.

Baron - There were no minds in the house. Some in the neighboring houses.

Hayze- with a slightly less rushed search, he was able to find a back exit they used for deliveries.
