[Past Bounty] Long Walks off Short Piers
#41
Without any emotional response, Hayze knelt down and removed a small throwing knife from a strap at his shin. He supposed he hadn't illustrated just how serious he was on this matter. With barely a flick of his wrist the blade went flying across the room at great speed toward one of the patrons. It was meant for his head but Hayze had felt a tug at the last second. His shadow had apparently made its way back to him just in time to save the man's life. It was a common occurrence. The blade was instead aimed at the man's tea cup.

He returned the blade to his hand as soon as it struck before turning to the man behind the counter again. "Give me the license."

As Hayze was focused on the man behind the bar, he failed to notice what happened behind him. He heard the scraping of chairs as some people got up, possibly afraid of what was going to happen. When suddenly, there is a quarterstaff striking the right shoulder of Hayze from above and behind. It hits with very strong strength.

Finding the seemingly dormant establishment, Baron looks it over for points of ingress. As he does so his eyes sparkle as though filled with distant stars, making any magic visible to him as a faint glow.

Baron had considered a small number of approaches some of which required a social approach. However, what dreamer could resist a sleeping house?

As Baron looks about, he sees a faint glow around the windows and doors. So the obvious points seemed to have been covered. What else does he try to find?

Baron thought to himself for a moment. In a place like Tiburon, you could usually count on the wealthy to invest in natural sunlight and cold cellars. The dreamer cast his gaze across the roof for a sky light and around the periphery of the property for a cellar entrance.

He doesn't see any skylights from his vantage. He can, however, see a cellar door off to the side. It is behind a locked fence made from wrought iron bars. It is pointed at the top in a mostly decorative fashion, but would probably hurt to land upon.

Hayze fell to his knee, the unexpected blow sending pain through his shoulder. It may have broken something if it weren't for the conductive properties of the cloak draped over his shoulders, the energy of the staff being spread out over a wider area.

He didn't have time to assess the situation by looking around. He risked being struck again. He needed a better position. Hayze cast a spell and the area around him suddenly blurred. Simultaneously, his armor changed color and pattern to one similar to the floor beneath him. He then pushed off his crouched position to a ducking run down the bar where he knew there was a clear path.

At the end of the bar, he stopped and turned. The throwing knife was still in his hand. His vision cleared as he released the spell. As soon as he spotted the man holding the staff, who was hopefully now disoriented, he threw the knife with great speed at the man's chest. He then drew his daggers from across his back ready for another attack.

The blur went off without a hitch. The area became hazy and hard to see clearly through. As Hayze got to the other side and whipped the dagger, he found his target had moved backwards out of the blur. He deflects the blade with a quick thrust of the quaterstaff to the side, seemingly unphased by the force it would have exerted. Getting a better look at the man, Hayze can see now that this man is wearing a uniform. And judging by his demeanor, he is either some kind of guard hired by the owner, or a police type who happened to be here. And for now, he is just staring at Hayze, waiting for him to make the next move.

Baron wandered over to the fencing, running his fingers along the bars and sizing it up before nodding to himself. Taking a step back from the fence, Baron shrugged off his duster coat. Folding it over thrice, he fashioned himself a patch of cushioned fabric which he attempted to drape over a pair of the blunt spikes.

The padding rested easily upon the top of the spikes. Should he chose to attempt to vault, he would likely not be stabbed.
